Congress leader Rahul Gandhi called on Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to conduct an urgent, time-bound audit of school infrastructure across the state following the tragic electrocution death of 13-year-old Mithun Manu at Thevalakkara Boys High School in Kollam on Thursday. The student died after coming into contact with a live electric wire on school premises.
In a post on X, Gandhi recalled urging Vijayan in 2019 for a comprehensive school infrastructure audit after a young girl’s death due to a snakebite in a classroom. “It pains me deeply that another precious life has been lost,” he wrote, emphasizing the need for a public audit and accountability for the tragedy. “Every child deserves a safe learning environment, and no parent should endure such an unimaginable loss.”
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about the safety of school facilities in Kerala, with Gandhi pressing the state government to prioritize infrastructure upgrades to prevent further tragedies. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of Mithun’s death, as public outrage grows over recurring safety lapses in schools.
