Assam Agricultural University (AAU) has achieved a breakthrough with its high-yielding purple rice variety, ‘Labanya,’ now registered under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights Authority (PPVFRA). This vibrant rice combines the nutritional benefits of traditional black rice with enhanced adaptability for everyday use and commercial farming, according to AAU’s Public Relations Officer, Ranjit Kumar Hout.
“‘Labanya’ is a milestone for AAU’s scientists,” Hout said, celebrating its recent PPVFRA registration. The variety was launched for commercialization prior to formal registration to tap its market potential, with exclusive rights granted to a local entrepreneur. Available on e-commerce platforms, ‘Labanya’ has reached over 18 states, with more than 30% of buyers returning for its quality, signaling strong consumer demand.
Boasting a yield of 4.5–5 tonnes per hectare in farmers’ fields, ‘Labanya’ outperforms traditional black rice, which yields only 1.5–2 tonnes per hectare. Its lower glycemic index, aromatic grains, and quick cooking time make it ideal for daily diets. With 60% head rice recovery and 18% amylose content, it offers excellent milling and eating quality. Rich in antioxidants, flavonoids, essential amino acids, and minerals, ‘Labanya’ is a nutritional powerhouse.

Unlike conventional black rice, which requires 45 minutes to an hour to cook and has a sticky texture, ‘Labanya’ is user-friendly while retaining the health benefits and appeal of pigmented rice. Its versatility shines in value-added products like bakery items, traditional delicacies, and gluten-free flour, making it a game-changer for health-conscious consumers and farmers alike.
