Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on Saturday that the state government is exploring the possibility of airlifting a 15-year-old girl, who suffered 70% burns after being set ablaze in Puri’s Balanga area, to AIIMS Delhi for advanced medical treatment. The horrific attack occurred when three unidentified assailants forcibly took the minor to the banks of the Bhargabi River, doused her with an inflammable substance, and set her on fire, police sources said.
The victim, who escaped to a nearby village for help, was initially treated at a local hospital before being transferred to AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Majhi, closely monitoring her condition, stated, “Since the victim is conscious and able to speak, we have requested AIIMS Bhubaneswar to explore airlifting her to AIIMS Delhi for better treatment.” He vowed to ensure the “strongest possible punishment” for the perpetrators, with a scientific team deployed to investigate the crime.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar Executive Director Dr. Asutosh Biswas described the girl’s condition as critical, with second- and third-degree burns covering 70-75% of her body. “The next 72 hours are crucial. She is on oxygen support in the ICU but remains conscious,” Biswas noted. Despite the severity, her ability to communicate offers hope, and the government is committed to covering all treatment costs. The incident has sparked outrage, with authorities under pressure to deliver swift justice.
