Punjab Police officer Gurinderjit Singh Nagra has been arrested in connection with an alleged extortion case after accusations that he demanded Rs 4 crore from a family by threatening to implicate their relatives in a false murder case. Nagra, who was serving as the Station House Officer (SHO) of Tanda Police Station in Hoshiarpur district, is also among those named in allegations made by United States prosecutors as part of a multinational investigation into organised crime. A case has been registered against him under provisions relating to extortion and corruption.
The Punjab Police initiated action after allegations surfaced during a media briefing by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the United States. According to US prosecutors, Nagra allegedly assisted members of gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria's organised crime syndicate in an extortion scheme targeting a family in Los Angeles. Investigators have alleged that the family was threatened with false criminal proceedings in India unless they paid approximately $400,000, equivalent to nearly Rs 4 crore. The allegations form part of a wider international investigation known as Operation Hard Ball, targeting transnational organised crime networks.
Following the emergence of the allegations, Punjab Police transferred Nagra from his post as SHO to the police lines as a precautionary measure. Hoshiarpur Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Kumar Malik stated that the decision was taken while the matter was being examined. The SSP clarified that, at that stage, the Punjab Police had not received any official communication from the Government of India or the Punjab Government confirming the allegations made by US authorities, but an internal inquiry was nevertheless ordered.

The departmental inquiry has been entrusted to a Superintendent of Police based in Jalandhar, who has been directed to examine all available facts and evidence. Punjab Police officials have stated that further administrative or legal action will depend on the findings of the investigation. Authorities have emphasised that the inquiry aims to establish the authenticity of the allegations and determine whether any misconduct occurred while the officer was serving in the force.
According to documents cited by US prosecutors, alleged gang member Gurlal Singh is accused of providing information about a victim in Los Angeles to Nagra for the purpose of falsely implicating the individual in a murder case. Prosecutors further allege that Nagra contacted the victim's father and threatened to initiate criminal proceedings against family members in India unless the demanded amount was paid. These allegations have been included in one of three indictments filed as part of the broader international organised crime investigation. The allegations made by US authorities have not been independently verified.
The case has attracted significant attention because it involves allegations of cross-border organised crime, corruption and abuse of official authority. Punjab Police have stated that the investigation will proceed in accordance with the law and that any further action will be based on evidence collected during the inquiry. Meanwhile, the international investigation continues, with US authorities pursuing multiple defendants allegedly linked to criminal networks involved in extortion, drug trafficking, murder and other organised offences across several countries.
