A 27-year-old woman has been arrested in Maharashtra’s Pune district for allegedly murdering her six-year-old son with the help of her lover and attempting to pass off the death as a heart attack, police said. The incident, which took place in the Khed area, has shocked local residents due to the brutality involved and the motive behind the crime. Authorities confirmed that the accused initially tried to mislead family members and avoid suspicion.
According to police officials, the accused, identified as Basiran Mehboob Sheikh, was estranged from her husband of 10 years and had been in a relationship with his friend, Ram Vinayak Kajewad. The couple allegedly viewed the child as an obstacle to their relationship and conspired to eliminate him. The victim, identified as six-year-old Aewez, was living with his mother, while his two siblings resided with their father.
Investigators revealed that the crime was carried out late on the night of April 4. The accused and her partner allegedly held the child’s head under water in a bucket to drown him and then slammed his body against the floor to ensure his death. Police described the act as deliberate and premeditated, carried out with the intention of permanently removing the perceived hindrance in their relationship.

Following the incident, Basiran reportedly transported the child’s body to her parents’ residence in Beed district. She then informed her family that the boy had died due to a heart attack, attempting to conceal the true cause of death. However, suspicions arose when the child’s paternal grandfather noticed visible injury marks on the body during funeral preparations.
The grandfather subsequently approached the police and lodged a complaint, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. A post-mortem examination was conducted, which confirmed that the child had been murdered. The findings contradicted the initial claim of natural death and provided crucial evidence for the case.
Police have arrested Basiran Mehboob Sheikh and initiated further legal proceedings, while efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend her co-accused, Ram Vinayak Kajewad, who remains absconding. Officials stated that a manhunt has been launched and assured that strict action will be taken against those involved. The case has raised serious concerns about domestic violence and child safety, with authorities urging vigilance and timely reporting of suspicious incidents.
