Protests continued across parts of Nepal for a third consecutive day following the arrest of former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli, with supporters taking to the streets and clashing with security forces. Demonstrations have been reported in the capital Kathmandu and other regions, reflecting deep political divisions after the high-profile detention.
Oli was arrested as part of an investigation into his alleged role in the deaths of dozens of people during a violent crackdown on anti-corruption protests in September 2025. Authorities are probing whether he failed to prevent the use of excessive force, which resulted in at least 76 fatalities during the unrest that eventually led to his resignation.
Following his arrest, supporters affiliated with his party, the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist–Leninist), staged protests and rallies, accusing the government of political vendetta. Demonstrators attempted to block roads and burn tyres, prompting police to intervene with force, including baton charges and tear gas in some instances.

The arrest came shortly after a major political transition in Nepal, with Balendra Shah assuming office after a sweeping electoral victory. The new administration has framed the move as part of efforts to ensure accountability for the deadly crackdown, while Oli’s legal team has challenged the arrest as unlawful and vowed to contest it in court.
Adding to the tension, Oli was briefly hospitalised after reporting health issues following his detention, further intensifying political attention around the case. The developments have kept supporters mobilised, with protests continuing into a third day despite police efforts to maintain order.
The situation remains volatile, with analysts warning that the unrest could escalate further if political consensus is not reached. The episode underscores Nepal’s fragile political climate following last year’s protests, which triggered a change in leadership and continue to shape the country’s evolving governance landscape.
