President Droupadi Murmu will be the Chief Guest at the National Human Rights Commission’s (NHRC) Human Rights Day function on December 10, to be held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. The event will bring together government officials, diplomats, civil society members, and human rights experts to discuss key issues related to access to public services.
Aligned with this year’s UN Human Rights Day theme, “Everyday Essentials,” the NHRC is also organising a National Conference on the topic “Ensuring Everyday Essentials: Public Services and Dignity for All.” Dr. P. K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, will deliver the keynote address, highlighting the role of efficient governance in ensuring dignity and equality.
The sessions will focus on access to basic amenities and public services through two panel discussions titled “Basic Amenities to All: A Human Rights Approach” and “Ensuring Public Services and Dignity for All.” Senior officials and domain experts will explore gaps and strategies for improving healthcare, education, housing, justice, and social protection.

The NHRC highlighted India’s progress in expanding access to essential services through initiatives such as PM Awas Yojana, Jal Jeevan Mission, Swachh Bharat Mission, Ujjwala Yojana, Ayushman Bharat, Jan Aushadhi Kendras, and the Aspirational Districts Programme. However, the Commission stressed the need for continued efforts to improve awareness, accountability, and equitable delivery of services.
Since 1993, the NHRC has registered over 23.8 lakh cases, recommending ₹264 crore in relief for victims of human rights violations. The Commission conducts investigations, open hearings, and policy advisories while promoting systemic reforms, legal reviews, and research on issues like child rights, mental health, labour welfare, and environmental protection.
The NHRC has also expanded digital access through the HRC Net Portal, enabling citizens to file and track complaints online, linked with over five lakh Common Service Centres and the National Government Services Portal. Several publications will be released on Human Rights Day, and the events will be livestreamed on NIC Webcast and YouTube starting at 10 am.
