Election strategist-turned-politician Prashant Kishor on Sunday announced that he will make his electoral debut by contesting the July 30 Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar as the Jan Suraaj Party candidate, setting up a high-profile contest in a constituency long regarded as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stronghold. The decision was formally announced by Jan Suraaj state president Manoj Bharti following a meeting of the party’s core committee. The Bankipur bypoll is scheduled for July 30, with counting of votes to take place on August 3.
The Election Commission has set July 13 as the last date for filing nominations. The by-election is expected to draw significant political attention as it will mark Kishor’s first direct electoral contest after years of influencing elections as a political strategist. Addressing a press conference after his candidature was announced, Kishor appealed to voters to judge him on merit and performance rather than political tradition. “The people of Bankipur are the richest and the most educated in Bihar. Let them vote for the best. If they feel they can repose their trust in me, I urge them to vote for me,” he said.
Projecting confidence despite his party’s limited legislative presence, he added, “Even as the lone MLA of my party, I shall outweigh the remaining 242 ones in the assembly.” The Bankipur Assembly seat became vacant after BJP leader Nitin Nabin was elected to the Rajya Sabha and subsequently shifted to Delhi following his appointment as the party’s national president. The constituency, located in Patna, has traditionally been considered one of the BJP’s strongest electoral bastions in Bihar, making Kishor’s decision to contest from the seat a significant political challenge.

Kishor launched the Jan Suraaj movement before transforming it into a political party with the stated objective of offering an alternative to Bihar’s established political formations. Before entering active politics, he earned national recognition as an election strategist, working on campaigns for several political parties and leaders across the country. His transition from political consultant to electoral candidate has been closely watched, with the Bankipur bypoll serving as the first direct test of his political appeal among voters.
The by-election assumes added importance as Bihar’s political parties continue to position themselves ahead of the next Assembly elections. A strong performance by Kishor could provide momentum to the Jan Suraaj Party’s efforts to establish itself as a credible political force in the state, while the BJP will seek to retain a seat that has historically remained one of its urban strongholds. Other major parties are also expected to field candidates, setting the stage for a closely watched multi-cornered contest.
Campaigning is expected to intensify in the coming weeks as parties focus on urban governance, infrastructure, employment and development issues that resonate with Bankipur’s electorate. With nominations set to close on July 13 and polling scheduled for July 30, the contest is likely to be viewed not only as a by-election but also as an early indicator of the evolving political landscape in Bihar ahead of future electoral battles.
