India and Japan are expected to further strengthen their strategic partnership as Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi may visit India as early as July for bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to local media reports. The proposed visit is seen as part of ongoing efforts by both countries to deepen cooperation across economic, security and geopolitical domains under their Special Strategic and Global Partnership framework.
As per reports by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK, arrangements are being made for Takaichi’s visit to Assam, where she is expected to hold her second in-person meeting with PM Modi. The leaders are likely to review progress in bilateral initiatives and explore new areas of cooperation based on the joint vision for the next decade outlined during Modi’s visit to Japan in 2025.
Key focus areas of the proposed discussions are expected to include energy security, resilience of critical mineral supply chains, and broader economic cooperation. With global geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions continuing to impact energy and resource flows, both sides are likely to emphasise the importance of stable and diversified supply networks.

Japan has also indicated interest in expanding the frequency of high-level exchanges between the two countries, including regular reciprocal visits by heads of government. This proposal is aimed at ensuring continuity in strategic dialogue and accelerating decision-making across priority sectors such as infrastructure, technology and defence cooperation.
The anticipated visit follows a series of recent diplomatic interactions between the two leaders. In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Takaichi on her election victory in Japan’s House of Representatives, expressing confidence in further strengthening bilateral ties. Takaichi, in response, conveyed her commitment to deepening the Special Strategic and Global Partnership and advancing cooperation in areas aligned with a Free and Open Indo-Pacific vision.
The two leaders last met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, where they discussed expanding collaboration in innovation, defence, talent mobility and trade. As preparations for the upcoming visit progress, both countries are expected to build on these discussions to further consolidate their long-standing partnership and enhance regional stability and economic integration.
