Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Australia in the “near future,” signalling continued strengthening of bilateral ties between the two countries following the latest Quad foreign ministers’ meeting held in New Delhi. Speaking to the media after the Quad talks, which included India, the United States, Japan, and Australia, Wong said Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had already announced the planned visit. She described the upcoming trip as part of ongoing high-level engagement between the two nations, which have significantly deepened cooperation in recent years.
Wong said the visit reflects the close relationship between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Albanese, as well as the broader strategic importance of India to Australia. She also highlighted the significant role of the Indian diaspora in Australia, calling it a valued part of the country’s multicultural society. “We very much look forward to PM Modi coming to Australia as a friend of our Prime Minister, as an important comprehensive strategic partner, but also because the Indian diaspora is such a valued part of our Australian community,” Wong said during her remarks.
She further emphasised that India and Australia share a “comprehensive strategic partnership” built on trust, aligned interests, and growing economic cooperation. According to her, both countries are working closely to diversify supply chains, strengthen economic resilience, and enhance productivity in a rapidly changing global environment. Wong also underscored India’s role as a key economic partner, describing it as one of the world’s fastest-growing major economies.

She noted that expanding trade and investment ties with India is central to Australia’s long-term economic strategy. The announcement came alongside broader discussions at the Quad meeting, where foreign ministers focused on critical technologies, energy security, supply chain resilience, and humanitarian cooperation. The grouping has increasingly positioned itself as a platform for coordinating responses to global economic and security challenges, particularly in the Indo-Pacific region.
Wong added that she looked forward to her own bilateral engagements with Prime Minister Modi during her visit to New Delhi, reinforcing what she described as a relationship anchored in strategic alignment and shared regional priorities. While no exact date for Modi’s Australia visit has been officially confirmed, the statement indicates that preparations for the high-level diplomatic trip are actively underway, with both sides expected to finalise scheduling in the coming months.
