On the occasion of Martyrs’ Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid heartfelt tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary, recalling his enduring influence on India’s moral, social, and economic foundations. The Prime Minister described Gandhi’s emphasis on Swadeshi as a fundamental pillar of India’s vision for self-reliance and national development.
In a post on X, PM Modi said that Mahatma Gandhi consistently advocated Swadeshi as a means to empower the nation from within. He noted that Gandhi’s ideals continue to inspire citizens to walk the path of duty, self-discipline, and service. According to the Prime Minister, Gandhi’s life and legacy remain deeply relevant in shaping a strong and self-sufficient India.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Gandhi’s unwavering commitment to non-violence, calling it a force powerful enough to transform the world without the use of weapons. Quoting ancient scriptures, he stressed that ahimsa represents the highest duty, truth, and moral strength, capable of protecting humanity and advancing righteousness.

Mahatma Gandhi, born as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in Gujarat, was a central figure in India’s freedom struggle and is revered as the Father of the Nation. He was assassinated on January 30, 1948, while on his way to a prayer meeting. Since then, January 30 has been observed as Martyrs’ Day to honor his sacrifice and the sacrifices of all freedom fighters.
To mark the day, the Centre organized an all-religion prayer meeting and Martyrs’ Day ceremony at Rajghat in New Delhi. The event was attended by senior leaders, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Rajghat Samadhi Committee Chairman Manohar Lal. Several other dignitaries, including BJP President JP Nadda, also paid tributes, while the Delhi Traffic Police issued advisories due to heightened security and traffic regulations in central Delhi.
