Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Wednesday jointly inaugurated the restoration and conservation project of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Prambanan Temple complex in Yogyakarta. The visit highlighted the centuries-old cultural and civilisational links between India and Indonesia, with both leaders emphasising cooperation in preserving shared heritage.
During his visit to the historic temple complex, Prime Minister Modi offered prayers at the ancient Hindu shrine and interacted with officials involved in the restoration work. Large numbers of people gathered along the route carrying Indian and Indonesian flags to welcome the two leaders as they arrived at the heritage site.
The India-supported restoration initiative aims to conserve the Prambanan Temple complex, a major cultural landmark in Indonesia. The project is being carried out with the involvement of the Archaeological Survey of India, which has previously worked on heritage conservation projects in Southeast Asia.

The ninth-century Prambanan Temple complex is one of Southeast Asia’s most significant Hindu monuments and is dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temple is known for its detailed architecture and carvings depicting stories from Indian epics, including the Ramayana.
Prime Minister Modi described the restoration project as a symbol of the enduring cultural relationship between India and Indonesia. The initiative comes amid efforts by both countries to deepen cooperation across areas including heritage preservation, strategic ties, and people-to-people connections.
The temple visit was part of Modi’s broader engagement during his Indonesia visit, where discussions also focused on strengthening bilateral relations. The two countries have been working to expand cooperation in areas beyond culture, including defence and economic partnerships, while highlighting their shared historical connections.
