Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday spoke with Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah following deadly floods in the neighbouring country and offered India’s assistance for rescue and relief operations. Modi expressed condolences over the loss of lives and said India stands in solidarity with the people of Nepal during the crisis. He also assured Shah that New Delhi is ready to provide humanitarian support.

“Spoke to Prime Minister Balendra Shah and conveyed condolences on the loss of lives due to the floods in Nepal,” Modi posted on X. He added that India was prepared to provide “all possible humanitarian assistance” and that Indian teams were coordinating closely with Nepal on rescue and relief efforts.

The floods caused widespread destruction in parts of Nepal, with images released by Nepali police showing large volumes of water rushing through rivers and sweeping away structures. Photographs from the affected areas showed severe damage caused by the floodwaters, with emergency agencies working to assess the situation and reach affected communities.

The Nepal Army has deployed helicopters and disaster response personnel to assist with rescue operations in the affected areas. Authorities are also dealing with damage to critical infrastructure. The Nepal Electricity Authority reported that around 430 megawatts of electricity generation capacity, including hydropower and solar facilities, had been affected by the disaster.

The flooding has also disrupted road connectivity, with several highways closed following the heavy water flow and damage to infrastructure. Authorities have been assessing the extent of the destruction while emergency teams continue rescue and relief operations. The sudden flooding has raised concerns about communities located near rivers and other vulnerable areas.

Nepal experiences heavy monsoon rainfall between June and September, with floods and landslides regularly affecting different parts of the country during the season. Scientists have also linked the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events in South Asia to climate change. India’s offer of assistance comes as Nepal continues efforts to rescue those affected and restore essential services in the flood-hit areas.
