Petrol and diesel prices across major Indian cities remained unchanged on April 4, 2026, providing relief to commuters amid volatile global crude oil markets. In the national capital, petrol is priced at Rs 94.77 per litre and diesel at Rs 87.67 per litre, with similar stability reported in Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and other metros.
Oil marketing companies like Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum (HPCL) update rates daily at 6 a.m., based on international crude benchmarks, rupee-dollar exchange rates, and local taxes since the dynamic pricing regime began in June 2017. Prices have held steady for several days despite geopolitical tensions in West Asia disrupting shipping routes and pushing aviation turbine fuel (ATF) to record highs above Rs 2 lakh per kilolitre in Delhi.
The consistency comes at a politically sensitive time, with state elections approaching, prompting the government to maintain control over auto fuel costs through stable taxation. While urban consumers benefit, rural areas face marginally lower rates due to fewer local levies. Premium variants saw minor hikes earlier this week, such as IOCL's XP100 petrol rising to Rs 160 per litre in Delhi.

Here are the latest rates in key cities:
| City | Petrol (Rs/litre) | Diesel (Rs/litre) |
| Delhi | 94.77 | 87.67 |
| Mumbai | 103.54 | 90.03 |
| Kolkata | 105.41 | 92.02 |
| Bengaluru | 102.92 | 90.99 |
| Chennai | 101.06 | 92.61 |
Consumers can verify rates via SMS services from oil companies or apps, as minor variations may occur between outlets. In Bengaluru, where the user is based, prices align with the national trend at Rs 102.92 for petrol and Rs 90.99 for diesel.
This stability contrasts sharply with neighbouring Pakistan, where fuel prices surged 42% for petrol and 55% for diesel recently due to fiscal pressures. Indian drivers continue to monitor global oil trends, as any sharp crude spike could end the current respite.
