Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff, declared Friday that the family is rooted in the “stable union between a man and a woman” and affirmed the inherent dignity of the unborn and elderly as God’s creations.
Speaking to the Vatican diplomatic corps, he reiterated Catholic teachings on marriage and abortion, setting a clear tone for his pontificate ahead of his installation Mass on Sunday.
In his first formal engagement since the conclave, Leo, an Augustinian, also urged a revival of multilateral diplomacy and interreligious dialogue to foster global peace.

His address, a customary protocol for new popes, greeted representatives from over 180 nations with which the Holy See maintains diplomatic ties. The Vatican, a sovereign state, holds observer status at the United Nations.
Emphasizing peace as his pontificate’s cornerstone, Leo echoed his inaugural words from St. Peter’s Basilica: “Peace be with you all.”
His remarks signal a commitment to traditional doctrine alongside a diplomatic push for harmony, aligning with his order’s focus on community and service, as the Vatican navigates complex global challenges.
