Actor-turned-politician and Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Pawan Kalyan has responded to growing online comparisons between him and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister-elect Vijay, amid renewed discussion on film stars entering active politics in southern India.Speaking to cadres of the Jana Sena Party at its headquarters in Mangalagiri, Pawan Kalyan acknowledged the public chatter linking his political journey with that of Vijay, who recently emerged as a major political figure in Tamil Nadu.
Without naming Vijay directly in parts of his remarks, he said people had been “pressuring” him in light of developments in the neighbouring state, where a film personality has successfully transitioned into the chief ministerial role.He noted that several individuals had messaged him suggesting that he should have taken a similar path in Andhra Pradesh politics. However, he stressed that each state’s political context is different and cannot be compared simplistically.
He also referred to his own electoral journey, recalling that he had contested the 2019 elections and faced significant political setbacks at the time.Pawan Kalyan used a Telugu idiom to underline his point, saying that the situation resembled “unnecessary excitement for a neighbour’s wedding,” implying that external enthusiasm does not reflect internal political realities.

He further remarked that people often react without fully understanding the ground situation, drawing a distinction between perception on social media and practical political challenges. The comments come at a time when comparisons between regional film stars entering politics have intensified across southern India, particularly after Vijay’s emergence as a significant political leader in Tamil Nadu.
The trend has reignited broader debate about the influence of cinema personalities in electoral politics and their ability to translate popularity into governance roles. The discussion has also been amplified following a recent warm phone interaction between Pawan Kalyan’s elder brother, veteran actor Chiranjeevi, and Tamil Nadu political leadership, which further fuelled online commentary linking film industry figures with political alignment and influence across states.
Pawan Kalyan’s remarks reflect an attempt to separate his political trajectory from cinematic comparisons, emphasising regional political realities and his party’s past electoral experiences. His response indicates continued sensitivity within regional political circles over public narratives that equate celebrity-driven political movements across different states.
