Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have initiated a large-scale search operation in Poonch district following the sighting of approximately six drones from Pakistan hovering over forward areas along the Line of Control (LoC). The incident, reported on Sunday night, has heightened concerns about potential surveillance or illicit activities, prompting a swift response to ensure no weapons or narcotics were airdropped.
The drones were detected at 9:15 PM on Sunday over the Balakote, Langote, and Gursai Nallah areas in the Mendhar sector of Poonch district, according to security officials. Believed to be engaged in surveillance, the drones were observed flying at high altitudes before returning to the Pakistani side within five minutes. Despite their brief presence, the unusual activity triggered immediate action, with security forces cordoning off the affected areas and launching a thorough search at first light on Monday to rule out any airdrops of weapons, explosives, or narcotics.
The use of drones by Pakistan-based operatives to smuggle arms and drugs across the LoC has emerged as a significant security challenge in recent years. These unmanned aerial vehicles, often equipped with advanced technology, pose a threat to border security by facilitating covert deliveries in remote and rugged terrain. In response, Jammu and Kashmir police announced a Rs 3 lakh reward in February 2024 for information leading to the recovery of materials dropped by drones, reflecting the gravity of the issue.

The ongoing search operation aims to secure the region and prevent any potential threats. Authorities remain vigilant, with heightened surveillance along the LoC to counter the growing menace of drone incursions. The incident underscores the persistent security challenges in the region, where cross-border activities continue to test the resilience of India’s defense mechanisms.
