Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Wednesday called for longer parliamentary sessions, enhanced cooperation between the treasury and Opposition benches, and a review of procedural rules to strengthen democratic functioning. Speaking at a farewell event for retiring members, Kharge emphasized that constructive collaboration is essential for Parliament to function effectively, warning that mistrust and sidelining dissent could weaken democratic institutions.
Kharge highlighted concerns over public issues, noting that frequent expunging of members’ remarks undermines accountability and distorts debates. He stressed the need for more sittings and meaningful deliberations on legislative matters, asserting that quality lawmaking requires active participation from Opposition members, particularly in parliamentary committees.
“It is my firm belief that rules must be reviewed regularly,” Kharge said, adding that the matter is currently under consideration by the General Purposes Committee. He also observed that politicians never truly retire from public life and continue to serve the nation through experience and guidance.

The Opposition leader cautioned that sidelining dissent not only diminishes credibility but also harms the quality of legislative discussions. He called for open debate, mutual respect, and recognition of differing viewpoints as pillars for effective governance.
Kharge lightened the mood by reminiscing about long-standing associations with senior leaders, joking about former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, saying, “He dated us, loved us, but married Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” drawing laughter from attendees.
Concluding his address, Kharge reiterated that strengthening parliamentary norms, fostering collaboration across party lines, and respecting dissent are crucial to maintaining the credibility and effectiveness of India’s legislative institutions.
