BJP national president Nitin Nabin has described the controversy surrounding the “shuddhikaran” or purification ritual conducted at the venue of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s rally as a “divisive conspiracy” by the Congress. Nabin accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the party of deliberately creating a controversy over the ritual and alleged that the incident reflected what he called the party’s divisive political thinking. His remarks came on Tuesday, September 9, while he was addressing the BJP State working committee meeting in Haldwani.
Speaking at the meeting, Nabin alleged that the Congress had turned the rally venue into the centre of a political controversy after a purification ritual was performed there. He said the Congress leadership had played a “political game” at the site and accused the party of attempting to create divisions through the controversy. Nabin specifically referred to the land in Haldwani where the purification was carried out, saying the political developments surrounding the venue were part of what he characterised as a deliberate attempt to deepen divisions.
The BJP president also alleged that slogans associated with a particular religion were raised from the “sacred land” where the purification ritual took place. He used the claim to question the Congress’s conduct and its approach to political mobilisation. Nabin’s remarks were framed as a broader criticism of the Congress leadership, with the BJP leader alleging that the controversy was not an isolated incident but part of a larger political strategy. The Congress has faced criticism from the BJP over the episode, while the controversy has added another point of confrontation between the two parties.

The dispute centres on the “shuddhikaran” ritual reportedly performed at the venue following the Congress rally addressed by Mallikarjun Kharge. Such purification rituals can carry religious and political significance, particularly when they are conducted at locations associated with political events. The BJP has used the episode to target the Congress and question the intentions behind the developments at the venue. Nabin’s comments indicate that the party intends to present the controversy as an example of what it describes as Congress’s divisive politics.
Addressing the BJP’s State working committee, Nabin directly linked the episode to Rahul Gandhi and the Congress leadership. He alleged that the party had deliberately created the controversy and described the actions associated with the venue as a conspiracy. The BJP national president also sought to frame the issue within a wider political debate over religious identity and political messaging. His remarks are likely to further sharpen the confrontation between the BJP and Congress, particularly as both parties continue to challenge each other over issues involving religion, political mobilisation and public discourse.
The controversy has consequently emerged as another flashpoint between the BJP and Congress, with Nabin using the Haldwani meeting to launch a strong attack on his political opponents. While the BJP has characterised the purification episode as evidence of Congress’s divisive approach, the allegations remain part of the ongoing political exchange between the two parties. Nabin’s comments underline the BJP’s decision to keep the issue in the political spotlight and connect the Haldwani episode with a broader argument about Congress’s political strategy and its approach to religious and social issues.
