C P Radhakrishnan, the former Governor of Maharashtra, officially demitted office on Thursday following his election as India’s next Vice-President, according to a statement from Rashtrapati Bhavan. The 67-year-old National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee secured a decisive victory in the vice-presidential election on Tuesday, defeating opposition candidate B Sudershan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes.
The vacancy in the Vice-President’s office arose after the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, necessitating a swift electoral process. Radhakrishnan’s transition to the national stage marks a significant milestone in his political career, which has included notable contributions as Maharashtra’s Governor since his appointment.
To ensure continuity in Maharashtra’s governance, President Droupadi Murmu appointed Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat to take on the additional responsibilities of Maharashtra’s Governor alongside his existing duties. This interim arrangement will maintain administrative stability in Maharashtra, one of India’s key economic and political hubs, until a permanent replacement is named.

Radhakrishnan’s tenure as Governor was marked by his active engagement with state development initiatives and efforts to strengthen ties between Maharashtra and the central government. His elevation to Vice-President is seen as a recognition of his leadership and public service record.
The Rashtrapati Bhavan communique emphasized the seamless transition, stating, “Consequent upon C P Radhakrishnan demitting the office of Governor of Maharashtra due to his election as the Vice-President of India, Acharya Devvrat, Governor of Gujarat, has been appointed to discharge the functions of the Governor of Maharashtra, in addition to his own duties.” This move reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring uninterrupted governance during this period of change.
As Radhakrishnan prepares to assume his new role as Vice-President, all eyes are on Maharashtra’s administrative landscape and how Devvrat will manage his dual responsibilities. The appointment underscores the importance of maintaining stability in one of India’s most prominent states amidst a significant political transition.
