In a major political development for Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta was sworn in as the new Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory on Friday, pledging a bold vision to transform the region into a globally renowned tourism destination.
Gupta, a seasoned political figure who previously served as Deputy Chief Minister and Speaker of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, took the oath of office in a ceremony held at the Raj Niwas. The oath was administered by Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.
Addressing the media shortly after assuming office, Gupta made it clear that his leadership will focus on unity, development, and global recognition for Ladakh. “I want to assure the people of Ladakh that we will rise above religion, caste, and party politics to rebuild a new Ladakh together,” he said.

He also acknowledged the region's historical neglect. “Ladakh has faced a lot of discrimination in the past. There’s still a lot to be done,” Gupta said, adding that his administration is committed to correcting those imbalances.
Unveiling his ambitious plans, the new LG emphasized tourism as a central pillar of development. “We want to take Ladakh to a level where its name will be recognised globally as a top tourism destination—just like the most famous travel spots around the world,” Gupta declared.
The appointment has sparked strong reactions, particularly from leaders in Jammu. MLA Vikram Randhawa, who attended the oath-taking ceremony, described the move as a major win for Ladakh but a loss for Jammu and Kashmir. “It’s Ladakh’s fortune and Jammu’s misfortune that a true son of the soil of Jammu has now been appointed as LG of Ladakh,” he said.
With a reputation for administrative efficiency and political experience, Kavinder Gupta’s entry signals a new chapter for Ladakh, one focused on visibility, growth, and global appeal.
