Chief Justice of India Surya Kant laid the foundation stone for the new Gujarat High Court Arbitration Centre building on Saturday, in a ceremony attended by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, and Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court Sunita Agarwal, along with judges from the Supreme Court and High Court.
Addressing the gathering, Justice Surya Kant emphasized that the new building and associated initiatives would strengthen India’s dispute resolution framework. “Infrastructure is not merely administrative; it reflects the credibility of an institution. A well-equipped arbitration centre instils confidence that disputes will be resolved fairly and impartially,” he said. He highlighted the importance of transparency, quality arbitrators, and the Centre’s digital initiatives—including a new website and newsletter—to support arbitration in India.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel described the initiative as a major boost to Gujarat’s judicial infrastructure and a step toward developing India as a global arbitration hub. Drawing parallels with India’s traditional “Panch Parmeshwar” dispute resolution practices, he stressed that arbitration could enhance the ease of doing business by enabling faster resolution of disputes. Patel also noted that the state budget had allocated over Rs 2,700 crore to the Law Department to strengthen judicial infrastructure under the principle of “Justice for All, Timely Justice.”
