Fresh tensions have emerged within Maharashtra’s opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance after Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) announced a “surprise” candidate for the upcoming Vidhan Parishad elections without prior consultation with alliance partners. The development has once again highlighted coordination challenges among the opposition bloc ahead of an important legislative contest.
The announcement was made by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut, who declared former Legislative Council Leader of Opposition Ambadas Danve as the official MVA candidate. Danve, a senior party leader from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, is known for his aggressive political style and organisational presence. His selection reportedly caught Congress leaders off guard, as they had expected a broader discussion before a final name was declared.
Congress leaders, including Maharashtra unit chief Harshwardhan Sapkal, had earlier indicated that they would support Shiv Sena (UBT) as the sole representative of the alliance only if Uddhav Thackeray himself was nominated. That position suggested Congress was willing to back a consensus candidate with wider symbolic value but not necessarily another Sena nominee chosen unilaterally.

Since the opposition alliance is effectively entitled to only one Vidhan Parishad seat in the current arithmetic, the candidate selection has become politically sensitive. Following Danve’s announcement, Congress responded quickly and signalled that it may field its own candidate, raising the possibility of a divided opposition vote and public display of internal disagreement.
The latest episode adds to recurring friction within the MVA, which includes Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress, and the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction). While the alliance continues to oppose the ruling coalition in Maharashtra, disputes over leadership, seat-sharing, and decision-making processes have repeatedly tested unity. The Vidhan Parishad election is now likely to be viewed as another measure of the bloc’s cohesion ahead of future political battles.
