A two-storey chawl in Bharat Nagar, Bandra (East), collapsed at 5:56 AM on Friday, injuring 15 people, including three senior citizens and two teenagers, according to a civic official. The incident at Chawl number 37 prompted a swift response from the Fire Brigade, police, and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, with search and rescue operations ongoing.
Twelve of the injured were admitted to Bhabha Hospital, while Mahammad Ansari (68) and Rehana Ansari (65), who suffered 50 percent burn injuries, were transferred to KEM Hospital for advanced treatment. The cause of their burns remains unclear. One man left the hospital against medical advice, but the remaining victims are stable and receiving care, the official confirmed.
The collapse has raised concerns about the safety of aging tenement structures in Mumbai, with authorities continuing efforts to ensure no one remains trapped in the debris.
