An eight-year-old boy died after accidentally falling into a water-filled construction pit in the Malad (East) area of Mumbai, police officials confirmed on Friday. The tragic incident has raised concerns over safety measures at construction sites in densely populated residential localities. Authorities said the accident occurred late on Thursday night, and an investigation is currently underway to determine any lapses.
According to officials from the Kurar police station, the child was reportedly attempting to retrieve a ball that had fallen into the pit when he slipped and fell into the water-filled ditch. The construction pit, which had accumulated water, is believed to have been left uncovered, posing a serious hazard to residents, especially children playing nearby.
Local residents alerted authorities soon after the incident, prompting police personnel and emergency responders to rush to the spot. The boy was rescued from the pit and immediately taken to a civic-run hospital in Kandivali. However, doctors declared him dead on arrival, indicating that the child had likely drowned before help could reach him in time.

Police later identified the deceased as Divyansh Rajesh Mourya. Officials stated that further enquiries are being conducted to establish whether proper safety protocols were followed at the construction site. Statements from witnesses and local residents are also being recorded as part of the investigation.
Incidents involving uncovered or poorly secured construction sites have been reported in several parts of Mumbai in recent years, often leading to injuries or fatalities. Civic authorities have repeatedly issued guidelines mandating that such sites be properly fenced and secured to prevent accidents, particularly during the monsoon season when pits can fill with water.
The latest incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations at construction sites across the city. Residents have called for accountability and immediate action against those responsible, emphasising that negligence in maintaining safety standards can have devastating consequences, especially for children.
