The Bihar Assembly’s Monsoon Session began with intense protests against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, led by the INDIA bloc and CPI(ML) Liberation members. Wearing black kurtas as a symbol of dissent, CPI(ML) leaders, including legislature party leader Mehboob Alam, accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of orchestrating a “wrongful deletion” of voters’ names to favor the ruling NDA ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. “We will fight this from the House to the streets,” Alam declared, signaling a fierce opposition campaign.
As the session commenced, opposition members disrupted proceedings, raising slogans against the SIR and demanding Chief Minister Nitish Kumar address the recent surge in violent crimes. AIMIM MLA Akhtarul Iman, whose party seeks to join the INDIA bloc, stormed the well of the House, chanting anti-SIR slogans, prompting Speaker Nand Kishore Yadav to admonish him and demand order. The session was adjourned after obituary references amid the uproar.
The protests underscore deep concerns over alleged voter suppression, with the opposition framing the SIR as a threat to democratic rights, setting the stage for a contentious session.
