Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam on Monday said no act of violence would be allowed to disrupt the state’s path towards peace and normalcy, a day after four people, including two women, were killed in attacks on villages in Tamenglong and Noney districts. The killings have raised fresh concerns over the fragile security situation in the state.

The attacks took place on Sunday, which coincided with Sahnit Ni, or Black Day, observed annually on September 13 by the Kuki community in Manipur. The day is commemorated in memory of people killed during the Kuki-Naga conflict in the state during the 1990s, giving the incidents added sensitivity amid existing ethnic tensions.

Konthoujam condemned the violence and said the government would take firm action against those responsible. He maintained that isolated acts of violence would not be permitted to undermine the broader peace process or reverse efforts aimed at restoring normalcy in the state.

The deaths in Tamenglong and Noney have come at a time when authorities and community representatives have been attempting to sustain dialogue and reduce tensions following prolonged unrest. The latest attacks, however, have highlighted the continuing security challenges in areas where communities remain vulnerable to armed incidents and retaliatory violence.

The Home Minister’s remarks sought to reassure residents that the administration remains committed to protecting lives and maintaining law and order. He stressed that violence could not be allowed to dictate the direction of the state or derail ongoing efforts to create conditions for peace and stability.

The incidents are likely to intensify scrutiny of security arrangements in the affected districts and the government’s response to fresh attacks. While authorities have reiterated their commitment to the peace process, the killings underline the need for sustained vigilance, accountability and continued engagement among communities to prevent further escalation.
