Fresh waves of violence and unrest have shaken Manipur, as suspected militant attacks and subsequent retaliatory tensions have led to killings, injuries, and allegations that over 38 people from the Kuki and Naga communities have been detained or held hostage by various groups across the state.
Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam said on Thursday that the state government is actively engaging with civil society organisations and political leaders to secure the release of those reportedly detained. He stated that discussions are underway in coordination with the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, adding that authorities are working to restore stability and prevent further escalation of violence.
The developments come amid heightened tensions following a deadly incident on Wednesday in Kangpokpi district, where suspected militants shot dead three church leaders and injured four others. In a separate attack the same day in Noney district, a civilian was killed and his wife sustained injuries, according to officials. The coordinated incidents have further deepened fears of escalating ethnic and militant violence in the region.

Konthoujam also visited the family of the civilian killed in Noney district and later went to JNIMS Hospital in Imphal East district, where the body was kept for post-mortem examination. He was accompanied by three Naga legislators during his visit, underscoring efforts to engage multiple community representatives amid the crisis.
Meanwhile, Taphou Kuki village chairman L. Chongloi filed a written complaint at Senapati police station alleging that 23 villagers travelling in seven trucks and a car were detained by unidentified individuals. Authorities have not yet independently verified the claim, but it has added to growing concerns over civilian safety and mobility in affected districts.
In response to the killings, Chief Minister of Mizoram and Manipur have condemned the violence and demanded swift action to apprehend those responsible. Normal life was also severely disrupted on Thursday, with shutdowns reported in Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and Chandel districts as Kuki-Zo and Naga organisations protested the killings of the church leaders and a civilian, further underscoring the fragile security situation in the state.
