Malayalam actor Mamitha Baiju has been in the spotlight after an old interview about her casting in Dhanush’s Tamil film Kara resurfaced online. The actor had previously faced criticism over her casting in the project, with questions raised about the choice of a Malayalam actor for a Tamil role. In the interview, Mamitha defended her decision, explaining that actors need to explore different characters and languages as part of their profession.

Speaking about the casting debate, Mamitha explained that she accepted the opportunity because she wanted to become more versatile as an actor. She noted that casting ultimately depends on the filmmaker’s vision and that her focus was on delivering a convincing performance. For Mamitha, taking on a rural character in another language was an opportunity to test her abilities and expand the boundaries of her work.

Filmmaker Vignesh Raja also addressed the criticism surrounding Mamitha’s casting. He explained that the decision was based on the character and performance rather than marketability. According to the filmmaker, around 20 to 25 actors were auditioned for the role, but Mamitha’s audition stood out from the others. He maintained that her selection was therefore a creative decision based on merit.

Vignesh also acknowledged the wider discussion around casting actors from different language industries. He argued that restricting performers and filmmakers to their own regional industries could limit creative possibilities. His position was that the character’s requirements should remain central to casting decisions, while audiences are free to question creative choices when they believe an actor has been typecast or a role has been approached inappropriately.

Meanwhile, Mamitha is recovering after being hospitalised following a high fever and body pain. Her health condition also forced her to cancel a scheduled appearance in Australia. She had been announced as a celebrity guest for an Onam celebration organised by the Clyde Malayali Association, but doctors advised her to take complete rest while undergoing treatment.

Mamitha later apologised to the organisers and fans who had been expecting her appearance. She expressed disappointment at missing the event and indicated that she hoped to meet the association members on another occasion. The organisers have postponed the celebration, with a new date expected to be announced after confirmation with Mamitha’s team and the venue.
