A 15.5-km road constructed at a reported cost of Rs 18 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana has developed a massive crater in Maharashtra’s Dahanu, barely three months after its construction. The collapse has raised concerns over the quality of the construction and prompted demands for an investigation into the project.

The Sarani-Urse-Aina road reportedly caved in, leaving a hole more than 10 feet deep in the middle of the roadway. The crater became large enough for a truck belonging to the contractor to become partially stuck, further highlighting the extent of the damage to the recently constructed road.

The road was constructed by Jijau Construction Company of Vikramgad. Local residents have alleged that substandard construction materials and poor-quality work may have contributed to the road giving way so soon after completion. The allegations have added to concerns over the execution and monitoring of infrastructure projects in the area.

Residents also claimed that they had repeatedly raised concerns about the quality of the construction while the road was being built. According to them, their complaints were not adequately addressed by the authorities, despite warnings about the condition and quality of the work.

The sudden collapse has caused anger among residents, who are seeking a detailed inquiry into the circumstances that led to the road failure. They have also demanded that responsibility be fixed if any irregularities are established during the investigation.

The incident has put the spotlight on the durability and quality of newly constructed rural roads and the need for effective monitoring of government-funded infrastructure projects. Residents are seeking strict action against the contractor and officials concerned if an inquiry establishes negligence or violations in the construction process.
