Maharashtra has unveiled an ambitious 10-year plan to conserve 12 forts linked to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, recently recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites under the “Maratha Military Landscapes” for their historical and cultural significance. The forts include Salher, Shivneri, Lohgad, Khanderi, Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Suvarnadurg, Panhala, Vijaydurg, and Sindhudurg in Maharashtra, and Gingee Fort in Tamil Nadu.
A senior official, speaking anonymously, outlined the plan, emphasizing the need to preserve each fort’s unique topography and historical features. “Each fort has distinct characteristics, requiring tailored conservation strategies,” the official said. The initiative prioritizes high-traffic areas like gates and fortifications, ensuring they retain their heritage charm. For forts with resident communities, efforts will focus on creating a traditional, heritage-friendly aesthetic.
The plan extends to improving access to less reachable areas, making them safe for visitors. Collaboration with district planning committees, the Public Works Department, and the tourism department will enhance infrastructure and visitor facilities. To address garbage and manpower challenges, district administrations may introduce nominal fees for waste management and security, with strict controls on plastic use and dedicated staff deployment.

“Public awareness is key,” the official noted, stressing the importance of educating visitors about the forts’ historical and cultural value to promote responsible tourism. The UNESCO nomination, led by experts like Tejas Garge and Vikas Kharge, highlighted not only the forts’ architectural brilliance but also Shivaji’s 17th-century vision of “Swarajya” (self-rule), which was pivotal in securing their World Heritage status.
This comprehensive effort aims to safeguard these iconic forts, ensuring their legacy endures for future generations while boosting tourism and cultural pride.
