The Maharashtra Government has issued a comprehensive Government Resolution (GR) instructing officials across State Departments, Semi-Government Offices, and Government-Controlled Bodies to accord full respect and courtesy to Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and Members of Parliament (MPs) during their visits. The circular, released by the General Administration Department (GAD), directs that officials must stand and greet MPs and MLAs upon arrival and departure, listen attentively to their concerns, and maintain polite telephone communication.
To ensure accountability, every office must maintain a physical or digital register recording all correspondence from MLAs and MPs. Replies to these communications are mandated to be issued within two months; if a timely response is not feasible, the matter must be escalated to department heads, and the concerned representative must be officially informed. Department heads are also directed to review all pending and completed correspondence every three months to track progress.
The resolution provides detailed protocol guidelines for invitations to major government events, requiring the inclusion of MPs, MLAs, State and Central Ministers, Mayors, and other dignitaries with appropriate seating arrangements respecting official precedence. Additionally, department heads must reserve two hours on the first and third Thursdays of every month for meetings with representatives and citizens, with flexibility to address urgent matters outside those dedicated hours.

The GR also advises avoiding major local programmes during legislative sessions to maintain focus on parliamentary work. It stresses strict compliance with the legislature’s privileges committee, warning that violations will attract disciplinary actions under civil service rules. Furthermore, officials must provide MPs and MLAs with information needed for welfare-related legislative work free of cost, except where restricted under the Right to Information Act, 2005.
This directive aims to improve transparency, administrative efficiency, and cooperation between government officials and elected representatives to better serve Maharashtra’s public and parliamentary responsibilities.
