Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has unveiled an ambitious vision to transform the state’s cities into models of sustainability and convenience, emphasizing planned urbanization as a cornerstone of modern development. Speaking at the Urban Transformation Summit-2025 in Bhopal, Yadav highlighted the state’s commitment to creating "green and clean" cities that prioritize ease of living while preserving each city’s unique heritage and identity.
The government’s multifaceted approach integrates advanced infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and enhanced public services to empower citizens and foster responsible urban communities.
A key focus of this initiative is tackling carbon emissions, a pressing challenge in urban development. The state’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is actively pursuing a cleaner environment through strategic urban planning. Major cities like Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Ujjain, and Gwalior are being developed with tailored plans that respect their cultural and historical significance while incorporating modern amenities.
For instance, Indore has maintained its status as India’s cleanest city for eight consecutive years, setting a benchmark for others. Bhopal, Jabalpur, Ujjain, and Gwalior are also gaining recognition for their advancements in digital governance, improved mobility, and enhanced quality of life, making them standout urban centers.
Infrastructure development is a critical component of this transformation. Metro train networks and large-scale flyovers are under construction across major cities to improve connectivity and reduce congestion. The Bhopal Metro project is advancing rapidly, with commercial operations set to commence in October 2025, while Indore’s metro system is already operational. These projects aim to provide efficient, eco-friendly transportation options, reducing reliance on carbon-intensive alternatives and enhancing urban mobility.

The state is also preparing for Simhastha 2028, a significant religious event in Ujjain, by developing facilities to ensure devotees can access places of worship quickly and with minimal energy consumption. This includes streamlined transportation and infrastructure upgrades to accommodate large gatherings while maintaining sustainability goals. Additionally, a robust fire and emergency service system, designed with scientific precision, is being established to enhance urban safety and responsiveness.
To further its environmental goals, Madhya Pradesh has introduced a new Electric Vehicle (EV) policy to accelerate EV adoption. This policy offers subsidies and fee waivers to buyers, alongside investments in charging infrastructure, manufacturing, and skill development. By fostering a comprehensive EV ecosystem, the state aims to reduce carbon footprints and promote sustainable urban transport.
Yadav’s vision underscores the importance of balancing urbanization with environmental responsibility. By integrating heritage preservation, modern infrastructure, and green initiatives, Madhya Pradesh is positioning itself as a leader in India’s urban transformation, aiming to create cities that are not only livable but also sustainable and empowering for their residents.
