Traffic on the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) has been suspended following multiple landslides and shooting stones triggered by incessant rainfall in Ramban district, officials said on Monday.
Movement of vehicles has been completely halted in both directions as landslides blocked both tunnels between Karol Bridge and Chanderkote, a Traffic Department official confirmed. Authorities have deployed men and machinery to clear the debris and restore normal traffic flow. Travellers have been urged to check with relevant authorities for the latest updates before attempting the journey.
On Sunday, the highway had been partially opened for one-way traffic but was later closed again in the evening due to falling rocks. Restoration work is underway, but officials warned that the situation remains challenging given the ongoing rainfall.

The Meteorological (MeT) office in Srinagar has forecast rain and snowfall in the region over the next few days. Erratic weather conditions, with rain in the plains and snowfall in the higher reaches of Kashmir, are expected to continue intermittently until April 10. Advisories have been issued for residents living in avalanche-prone zones and remote areas of the Kashmir Valley.
No major incidents have been reported on NH-44 so far. However, a recent avalanche at Zojila Pass claimed seven lives and injured eight others. Multiple vehicles were trapped under snow debris, prompting extensive search and rescue operations in the area.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, urging travellers to remain cautious and follow safety advisories as the cleanup and weather assessments proceed.
