A political controversy erupted in the Kerala Assembly on Saturday after Chief Minister V D Satheesan was accused of contradicting his official response regarding a proposed local holiday for the annual Champakulam Moolam Boat Race. The row began after an open microphone allegedly captured the chief minister making remarks that appeared to dismiss the request moments after assuring the House that the government would consider it. The incident quickly gained attention after video clips circulated widely on social media, prompting criticism from the opposition and triggering demands for clarification.

The issue arose when United Democratic Front (UDF) MLA Reji Cheriyan of the Kerala Congress (Joseph) requested that the government declare a local holiday in Kuttanad taluk to facilitate public participation in the historic Champakulam Moolam Boat Race. Responding during the Assembly session, Satheesan stated that the government would examine the proposal. However, shortly after taking his seat, he was allegedly heard through an open microphone saying that the request would not be granted "under any circumstances," leading to allegations that his private remarks contradicted his statement on the Assembly floor.

The video of the alleged open-mic remark was widely shared by legislators from the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), who questioned the chief minister's sincerity in responding to the request. The clip quickly became a subject of political debate, with opposition leaders accusing Satheesan of misleading the Assembly by publicly promising consideration while privately rejecting the proposal. The incident also generated significant discussion on social media, where users debated the context and implications of the recorded comments.

Seeking to defuse the controversy, Kerala Minister P Kunhalikutty defended the chief minister and argued that the viral clip had been misinterpreted. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Kunhalikutty said the remarks were taken out of context and were part of a separate conversation unrelated to the request for a local holiday. The minister, who was seated next to Satheesan during the Assembly proceedings, maintained that the chief minister's comments should not be linked to the discussion on the boat race and insisted that the circulating narrative was misleading.

The Champakulam Moolam Boat Race is one of Kerala's oldest and most celebrated traditional snake boat races, attracting thousands of spectators each year. Held in the Alappuzha district, the annual event is regarded as an important cultural and sporting festival that showcases Kerala's rich heritage and draws participants and tourists from across the state. Requests for local holidays during major regional festivals and cultural events are not uncommon, particularly in areas where public participation is significant.

While the government has not issued any further clarification on whether a local holiday will ultimately be declared, the controversy has once again highlighted how open-microphone moments can rapidly escalate into political flashpoints. With rival parties continuing to trade accusations over the incident, attention is likely to remain focused on the government's final decision regarding the holiday request and on whether the chief minister's remarks were indeed related to the issue under discussion or part of an unrelated exchange.
