The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for nine Kerala districts—Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod—warning of very heavy rainfall (11.5–20.4 cm) on Sunday.
The alert follows intense monsoon activity, with a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall (>20.4 cm) already in place for Kannur and Kasaragod, signaling potential flash floods and landslides.
The heavy downpours, driven by an east-west trough and cyclonic circulation over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, have caused waterlogging and traffic disruptions across the state.

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has urged residents in landslide-prone and low-lying areas to relocate to safer zones and avoid riverbanks. Fishermen are advised against venturing into the sea due to squally weather with winds of 40–50 kmph.
Recent IMD data reports significant rainfall in Kozhikode (9 cm at Kakkayam) and Palakkad (7 cm at Ottapalam), with rivers like Korapuzha and Kabani on high alert.
Educational institutions in Kannur, Kasaragod, Wayanad, and parts of Kozhikode remain closed as a precaution. Authorities are monitoring dam levels, with potential shutter openings at Peringalkuthu and Peechi dams in Thrissur.
