A holiday trip to Goa ended in tragedy after a tourist from Karnataka was swept away by powerful waves at Baga Beach while standing on seaside rocks despite repeated warnings. The incident, which was captured on video by his companion, has gone viral on social media and renewed concerns over tourist safety at the state's beaches, particularly during the monsoon season when sea conditions are highly unpredictable.
The deceased has been identified as 34-year-old Ashpaq Masali from Karnataka's Bijapur. According to Goa Police, Masali had travelled to Goa with a woman friend from Sangli for a vacation. The two had spent the day at Baga Beach, one of Goa's most visited tourist destinations, before the incident occurred. Police said Masali had reportedly consumed alcohol before moving closer to the waves.
Investigators said Masali walked onto a rocky stretch along the shoreline despite repeated warnings from his companion to stay away from the water. The woman recorded a video showing him enjoying the splashing waves while standing on the rocks. Moments later, a large wave struck the area with force, knocking him off balance and dragging him into the sea before he could reach safety.

Emergency services and local authorities were alerted immediately after the incident. Rescue teams launched a search operation, but the strong currents and rough sea conditions made the effort challenging. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident while officials have reiterated the importance of following beach safety guidelines, especially during periods of high tide and rough weather.
The viral video has sparked widespread discussion online about the dangers of ignoring warning signs and venturing onto rocky shorelines during the monsoon. Authorities have repeatedly advised visitors to avoid entering the sea or climbing onto rocks when weather conditions are unsafe, as powerful waves and unpredictable currents can quickly turn fatal even for experienced swimmers.
Goa's beaches attract millions of domestic and international tourists every year, but officials caution that the coastline becomes significantly more dangerous during the monsoon months due to rough seas and strong undercurrents. The latest tragedy serves as a reminder for tourists to heed lifeguard instructions, avoid alcohol before approaching the sea and strictly follow safety advisories to prevent similar incidents.
