The Karnataka High Court recently modified the sentence of a 71-year-old man convicted in a fatal road accident case, reducing his punishment from one year in prison to simple imprisonment for a single day. The court took into account the convict’s deteriorating health condition, observing that he is wheelchair-bound and unable to perform daily activities without assistance.
Justice V Srishananda passed the order while hearing the case of Syed Saifudeen, who had challenged the earlier sentence awarded in the accident case. The court noted that considering the convict’s age and physical condition, the circumstances warranted a compassionate approach. Along with reducing the jail term, the court directed Saifudeen to pay an enhanced compensation amount of Rs 5 lakh to the family members of the deceased.
In its April 15 order, the High Court remarked that the concept of “blood money” is generally alien to Indian criminal jurisprudence. However, the bench clarified that the modification was being made as an exceptional measure because of the petitioner’s medical condition and inability to independently manage his day-to-day life.

The compensation ordered by the court will be paid in addition to the amount already received by the deceased’s family through the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal. The court observed that the enhanced financial compensation, combined with the modified sentence, would serve the interests of justice in this specific case.
The ruling has drawn attention because it balances humanitarian considerations with criminal accountability. While the High Court maintained the conviction in the accident case, it chose to soften the sentence after taking into account the advanced age, medical difficulties and dependency of the convict on others for basic movement and care.
