A visible strain within the INDIA opposition bloc surfaced on Friday after Kanimozhi of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) formally requested a change in seating arrangements in the Lok Sabha, seeking to move DMK MPs away from members of the Indian National Congress.
In a letter addressed to the Lok Sabha Speaker, Kanimozhi cited “changed political circumstances” and stated that it would no longer be appropriate for DMK members to continue sitting alongside Congress MPs in the House. The request comes amid rapidly shifting political alignments in Tamil Nadu following the recent assembly elections.
The political tensions escalated after the Congress extended conditional support to Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-politician Vijay, in its bid to form the government in Tamil Nadu. The move effectively marked the end of Congress’s alliance with the DMK in the state after years of cooperation under the INDIA opposition platform.

TVK emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections by winning 108 seats in the 234-member House, falling 10 seats short of the majority mark of 118. Congress secured five seats and has now aligned itself with TVK as part of efforts to support government formation in the state.
In her communication, Kanimozhi stated that the altered political situation necessitated a revised seating arrangement for DMK lawmakers in Parliament. The letter is being viewed as a symbolic yet significant indication of widening cracks within the opposition coalition at the national level.
The development has added another layer of complexity to the already fluid political scenario in Tamil Nadu, where post-poll alliance negotiations continue. It also signals the growing impact of state-level political realignments on the broader structure of opposition politics in Parliament.
