Kandiyoor Narayana Panikkar, widely regarded as one of India’s foremost Marxist historians and a fearless public intellectual, passed away at the age of 90 in Thiruvananthapuram following an age-related illness. Known for his incisive critiques of communalism and his staunch defence of secularism, Panikkar’s work left an enduring mark on both scholarship and public discourse.
Over a distinguished career, Panikkar held several prominent academic and administrative positions. He served as Vice Chancellor of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Vice Chairman of the Kerala State Higher Education Council, and was the founding president of the Kerala History Congress. His leadership helped shape historical scholarship in Kerala and beyond, promoting rigorous research and critical engagement with India’s past.
A prolific writer, Panikkar authored seminal works such as A Concerned Indian’s Guide to Communalism, Towards Freedom, 1940: A Documentary History of the Freedom Struggle, Against Lord and State: Religion and Peasant Uprisings in Malabar, Culture and Consciousness in Modern India, Culture, Ideology and Hegemony – Intellectuals and Social Consciousness in Colonial India, and Before the Night Falls. These publications are celebrated for challenging sectarian narratives and fostering a nuanced understanding of India’s social and political history.

Beyond academia, Panikkar was a fearless voice in public debates on education, culture, and politics. He chaired an expert committee appointed by the Kerala government to review school textbooks and, in 2010, launched Indian Ruminations, an online platform for literature and journalism that reflected his commitment to public engagement and intellectual discourse.
Born in Guruvayoor in 1936, Panikkar is survived by his wife, Usha Bhargava, his classmate from Rajasthan University, and their two children, Ragini and Shalini. His legacy endures through his writings, his contributions to education, and his steadfast advocacy for secular and democratic values in India.
