A devastating road accident on Saturday morning near Khapri bypass in Dhamtari district, over 80 km from Raipur, resulted in the deaths of three personnel from the elite CoBRA 201 Battalion and their car driver. The Maruti Swift Dzire they were traveling in collided with a stationary truck on the National Highway, leaving the vehicle mangled beyond recognition.
According to police reports, five people were returning from Jagdalpur (Bastar) when the accident occurred. The jawans were on leave, traveling to Raipur. Witnesses rushed to the scene after hearing the loud crash and alerted authorities, who immediately initiated rescue operations.
The deceased have been identified as Sub-Inspector Umed Singh, Head Constable Mukesh Kumar, Constable Rajkumar, and civilian driver Hiralal Nagar. One of the jawans, Abhimaan Rai, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Raipur for advanced medical treatment.

The bodies of the deceased were recovered from the wreckage and sent to the district hospital for post-mortem examination. Police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, examining road conditions, vehicle speed, and truck positioning.
Vishnu Deo Sai, Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, expressed profound grief over the loss of the three CoBRA jawans, calling the incident “deeply heart-wrenching” and extending condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.
The accident underscores the risks faced even by off-duty security personnel traveling across the state, prompting authorities to review safety measures and emergency response protocols along major highways.
