A fire broke out at a slum cluster in the eastern suburbs of Mumbai on Saturday morning, gutting several huts in the Govandi area. Civic officials said there were no casualties reported in the incident, which occurred around 10 am at New Gautam Nagar, triggering a swift response from the city’s fire and emergency services.
According to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the blaze spread across a row of makeshift huts, prompting residents to evacuate the area as thick smoke engulfed the locality. Firefighters were alerted soon after the flames were spotted, and emergency teams rushed to the scene to prevent the fire from spreading further in the densely populated settlement.
At least four fire engines, along with other emergency response vehicles and personnel, were deployed to contain the blaze. Fire officials said the fire was largely confined to four to five huts, limiting the scale of damage. Operations focused on cooling the surrounding structures and ensuring that nearby homes were not affected, given the close proximity of dwellings in the slum cluster.

While the fire was brought under control within a short span of time, officials said the cause of the blaze is yet to be ascertained. Preliminary assessments will be followed by a detailed investigation to determine whether the fire was triggered by an electrical short circuit, cooking-related accident, or other factors commonly associated with fires in informal settlements.
Incidents of fire are not uncommon in Mumbai’s slum areas, where cramped living conditions, temporary electrical connections, and the use of inflammable materials increase vulnerability. Civic authorities reiterated the need for improved fire safety awareness and infrastructure upgrades in such localities to reduce risks. Further details on damage assessment and rehabilitation measures, if required, are expected once officials complete their on-site inspection and inquiry.
