A significant political development unfolded in Bihar on Sunday as the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) held its first major legislative party meeting following Nitish Kumar’s decision to step down as Chief Minister. The meeting took place at 1, Anne Marg in Patna and lasted for nearly an hour, drawing close attention from political observers across the state.
Despite expectations that a new leader of the JD(U) legislative party would be selected during the session, no immediate decision was taken. Instead, the party reached a unanimous resolution authorising National President Nitish Kumar himself to choose the next leader of the legislative wing, leaving the final call in his hands.
Briefing the media after the meeting, JD(U) Chief Spokesperson Neeraj Kumar confirmed the decision and said the party had formally entrusted Nitish Kumar with full authority on the matter. He added that members of the legislative party expressed gratitude for Nitish Kumar’s long-standing leadership, governance record, and his contribution to shaping Bihar’s identity at the national level.

Neeraj Kumar also stated that Nitish Kumar addressed the meeting and indicated his continued involvement in the state’s political and developmental activities. According to him, the former Chief Minister plans to remain active by touring various regions of Bihar with party leaders and maintaining close engagement with organisational and governance-related issues.
Addressing speculation about internal differences, party leaders strongly denied any discord within JD(U). Neeraj Kumar remarked that there was “absolutely no dispute,” adding that the party’s very name reflects its unity and collective functioning. He further clarified that no individual names were discussed during the meeting for the leadership role.
The resolution authorising Nitish Kumar was reportedly moved by Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary and received unanimous approval from all members present. The absence of an immediate announcement has, however, triggered political speculation across Bihar’s political circles regarding the future leadership structure.
Meanwhile, attention was also drawn to posters that appeared ahead of the meeting supporting Nishant Kumar as a potential future leader. Party sources, however, clarified that Nishant Kumar is not currently eligible for any legislative leadership role as he is not a member of either House, adding that his consideration would only be possible after election to the Assembly or Legislative Council.
