External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held high-stakes talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Moscow on Thursday, aiming to bolster the India-Russia partnership ahead of the annual summit later this year. The meeting, described by Jaishankar as an opportunity to review political ties and explore new avenues in trade, economic investment, defense, science, technology, and cultural exchanges, signals a deepening strategic alliance amid global uncertainties.

Jaishankar highlighted the guidance from recent summits, including the 22nd annual meeting last July and the Kazan gathering, as a foundation for advancing the “special and privileged strategic partnership.” The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that the discussions will focus on creating resilient transport, logistics, banking, and financial networks capable of withstanding external pressures, alongside boosting cooperation in energy, agriculture, and innovation. A key focus will be increasing the use of national currencies in mutual transactions, reducing reliance on international financial systems.
