The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) unveiled a striking model of the Bharatiya Antariksh Station (BAS) module during the National Space Day celebrations at Bharat Mandapam, marking a significant milestone in India’s space ambitions. The BAS, India’s first indigenously developed space station, is poised to join the elite group of orbital laboratories, with its initial module, BAS-01, scheduled for launch by 2028.
The BAS-01 module, weighing 10 tonnes, will be positioned in a low Earth orbit at 450 km. It features cutting-edge technologies, including the indigenously developed Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS), Bharat Docking System, Bharat Berthing Mechanism, automated hatch system, and integrated avionics. The module also includes viewports for scientific imaging and crew recreation, radiation and thermal protection, and provisions for propulsion and ECLSS fluid refilling. Designed to support extravehicular activities, it incorporates space suits, airlocks, and safeguards against Micro Meteoroid Orbital Debris (MMOD).
By 2035, ISRO aims to complete the BAS with five modules, establishing it as a hub for microgravity research, space tourism, and technology demonstration. The station will enable studies in space, life sciences, medicine, and interplanetary exploration, while testing critical technologies for sustained human presence in space. It will also foster international collaborations and inspire young Indians to pursue careers in space science and technology.
