Fast attack craft often described as “mosquito boats” have emerged as a growing concern for US naval operations in the region, with reports linking the tactic to Iranian strategy under the influence of Mojtaba Khamenei amid escalating tensions over a US-imposed blockade.
These small, highly maneuverable vessels are designed to swarm larger warships, exploiting speed and numbers rather than firepower. Military analysts say such asymmetric tactics could complicate enforcement of the blockade, particularly in the narrow and congested waters of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route.
The renewed focus on these boats comes as the United States, under Donald Trump, has intensified efforts to restrict Iranian maritime activity. The blockade, aimed at curbing Tehran’s ability to move goods and oil, has already led to multiple confrontations, including the recent seizure of an Iranian-linked vessel.

Iran’s naval doctrine has long emphasized unconventional warfare, including the use of fast boats, mines, and coastal missile systems to offset the technological superiority of larger navies. The so-called “mosquito fleet” is a key component of this approach, allowing Iran to threaten commercial shipping and military vessels without engaging in direct large-scale conflict.
Security experts warn that even a limited clash involving such tactics could escalate quickly, given the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz. A significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes through the waterway, making any disruption a matter of global concern.
As tensions remain high, the potential deployment of these fast-attack boats adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile situation. While no major confrontation has been reported involving these vessels so far, their presence underscores the evolving nature of maritime conflict in the region and the challenges facing enforcement of the blockade.
