Iran has strongly condemned the United States’ seizure of an Iranian-flagged cargo vessel near the Strait of Hormuz, calling the action “piracy” and a violation of the ongoing ceasefire, in a sharp escalation of tensions between the two countries.
According to Iranian military authorities, the interception and boarding of the vessel by US forces constituted an “act of aggression” and breached the terms of a fragile truce that had been holding in the region. Tehran warned that its armed forces would respond, raising concerns about a possible collapse of the ceasefire agreement.
The United States, however, has maintained that the ship was attempting to bypass a naval blockade imposed on Iranian-linked maritime traffic. US officials said the vessel ignored repeated warnings before being disabled and taken into custody by naval forces operating in the Gulf of Oman.

The incident marks the first such interception since Washington initiated the blockade earlier this month, a move aimed at pressuring Tehran amid ongoing geopolitical tensions. Iran has consistently opposed the blockade, arguing that it violates international norms and disrupts legitimate commercial shipping.
The confrontation has further complicated already fragile diplomatic efforts, including proposed talks between the two sides mediated by Pakistan. Iran has indicated that it may withdraw from negotiations altogether unless the blockade is lifted, citing what it describes as “unreasonable” US actions and shifting policy positions.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical artery for global energy supplies, with nearly a fifth of the world’s oil passing through it. Any disruption in the region has immediate implications for international markets, and the latest developments have already heightened concerns over oil price volatility and broader regional stability.
