IndiGo Airlines has suspended all flights to and from Kathmandu until at least 12:00 pm on September 10 due to the closure of Tribhuvan International Airport, triggered by escalating Gen Z-led protests in Nepal. The airline issued a travel advisory on Tuesday, stating, "All flights to and from Kathmandu stand cancelled until 1200 hrs on September 10. If your travel plans are impacted, you may opt for an alternate flight or claim a refund through our website."
To ease passenger concerns, IndiGo announced waivers on rescheduling and cancellation fees for travel to and from Kathmandu until September 12, applicable for bookings made on or before September 9. The airline emphasized its commitment to passenger safety, adding, "Our teams are closely monitoring developments and will provide timely updates once operations resume. Your safety and peace of mind remain our top priority."
The unrest in Nepal stems from anti-government protests that have intensified over the past two days, resulting in at least 19 deaths and over 500 injuries. Clashes around the Federal Parliament and other parts of Kathmandu have seen demonstrators set fire to government buildings, including the parliament. Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned amid the chaos.

In response, India’s Cabinet Committee on Security convened a meeting to discuss the situation, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return from an aerial survey of flood-affected areas in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. In a post on X, PM Modi expressed grief over the violence, stating, "The violence in Nepal is heart-rending. I am anguished that many young people have lost their lives. The stability, peace, and prosperity of Nepal are of utmost importance to us. I humbly appeal to all my brothers and sisters in Nepal to support peace."
IndiGo continues to monitor the situation and urges affected passengers to check its website for updates on flight resumptions.
