India’s first bullet train service is set to begin operations in phases from 2027, marking a major milestone in the country’s high-speed rail ambitions. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the first operational section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor, connecting Surat and Bilimora in Gujarat, is scheduled to be inaugurated on August 15, 2027. The announcement signals the beginning of phased operations on India’s first high-speed rail network, which aims to significantly reduce travel time and improve connectivity between key economic centres.
The 508-kilometre Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor will be opened in multiple stages after the launch of the Surat-Bilimora section. According to the rollout plan, subsequent operational stretches will include Vapi-Surat, Vapi-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad-Thane, and finally the complete Ahmedabad-Mumbai route. The phased commissioning strategy is intended to make completed sections available for public use before the entire corridor is finished, allowing passengers to benefit from the project while construction continues on the remaining stretches.
Vaishnaw said that nearly 80% of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project has already been completed, with construction progressing rapidly toward the scheduled timeline. The high-speed rail project is expected to introduce advanced railway technology to India while enhancing passenger convenience, improving regional connectivity, and supporting economic growth along the corridor. Once fully operational, the service is expected to substantially reduce travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, benefiting both business and leisure travellers.

The Railway Minister also outlined plans to expand India’s bullet train network beyond the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route. He announced three proposed high-speed rail corridors centred around Hyderabad, including Pune-Hyderabad, Hyderabad-Chennai, and Hyderabad-Bengaluru. In addition, a Hyderabad-Mumbai high-speed rail link is expected to improve connectivity between the two major cities and reduce travel time significantly. Vaishnaw said these projects would reshape transportation infrastructure across southern India and strengthen regional economic integration.
Speaking about Telangana’s future rail infrastructure, Vaishnaw said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved three high-speed bullet train corridors linked to Hyderabad, which he said would transform the state’s transportation landscape. He added that the proposed routes would pass through several districts of Telangana, bringing faster connectivity and supporting long-term development. The projects are expected to improve access between major urban centres while encouraging investment and economic activity in the regions they serve.
Apart from the bullet train network, the minister highlighted the Centre’s broader railway modernisation efforts under the Nav-Nirmaan station redevelopment programme. A total of 261 railway stations across the country are currently being upgraded, including major stations in Telangana such as Secunderabad, Begumpet, and HITEC City. The Union government has also allocated ₹5,400 crore for railway infrastructure development in Telangana, with the investment aimed at strengthening rail connectivity, modernising passenger facilities, and supporting the state’s expanding transportation needs.
