Indian Railways has reported a significant shift towards digital ticketing, with 89% of reserved train tickets now being booked online, while bookings made through reservation counters have declined to 11% over the past year. The figures were shared by the Ministry of Railways in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, highlighting the growing preference for online reservation platforms. Between June 2025 and June 2026, passengers booked a total of 65.08 crore reserved train tickets across the Indian Railways network.
According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, approximately 57.90 crore tickets were booked through online channels during the period, compared to 7.18 crore tickets purchased at railway reservation counters. The minister attributed the continued growth in digital bookings to measures implemented by the Railways to strengthen the online reservation system and improve the booking experience for passengers. The latest data reflects a sustained trend towards digital adoption as more travellers choose internet-based ticketing over traditional counter services.
The ministry noted that the increase in online bookings follows a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing the security and efficiency of the ticketing process. These measures include efforts to curb misuse of the reservation system, particularly by automated bots that can unfairly secure tickets during high-demand booking windows. Authorities have introduced stricter monitoring and technological safeguards to ensure that genuine passengers receive better access to online reservations.

Indian Railways has been steadily expanding its digital infrastructure in recent years as part of broader efforts to modernise passenger services. Online booking platforms have become the preferred option for travellers because of their convenience, faster processing, and round-the-clock accessibility. While reservation counters continue to serve passengers who prefer offline services or have limited internet access, the latest figures indicate that digital ticketing has firmly become the dominant mode of booking reserved train journeys across the country.
